The Modern Enigma of a Spring Afternoon | Inspired by Giorgio de Chirico’s “The Enigma of an Autumn Afternoon"

Intrigued by the enigmatic and distant atmosphere often seen in paintings from the Metaphysical Art movement, I wanted to recreate a metaphysical piece that one can relate to in the modern day. After studying the works of Giorgio de Chirico, I felt very connected to the feelings expressed in his works. This short film was inspired by the painting "The Enigma of an Autumn Afternoon", which is the first painting in de Chirico's Metaphysical Town Square series. These paintings depict a series of quiet and strangely simplified old towns. De Chirico plays with this relationship between the real and the unreal. Inspired by his understanding of the world around him, I filmed and edited this short video to represent my understanding of the enigma of the universe. I experimented in adding a fourth dimension to the world that he created—time, which I represented through the spinning wheel. The concept of time is vague. It can seemingly teleport an individual to anywhere; so is "motion" part of “time” as well? Another aspect is that entropy forever plays a role in our daily lives, and everything is always going out of order. But in this surreal world that I have created, things can go back to how they were, and order can be recreated. However, this video is up to everyone’s interpretation, as every individual has his or her own understanding of the world around them.
